Ice Capades

OK, so the Winter Olympics are losing the cross-country channel-surfing race to “American Idol.”

Ice dancing, women’s bobsledding, curling and the rest may not be getting their props from the viewing public, but they make ideal cartoon props. Not quite compulsory, and certainly not executed with high degrees of conceptual difficulty, these cartoons won’t win us any Pulitzer medals or spark any worldwide riots, but hey, they’re good, clean funny! (Full disclosure: I’ve drawn four Olympic-themed toons already.)

This American judge appreciated Dan Wasserman’s Summers-game angle, Rob Rogers’ red-ink rendering and Mike Luckovich’s leap into the doping controversy. But the perspective-enhancing gold goes to Norwegian Herbjorn Skogstad, whose country has been targeted, along with Denmark, in the still-simmering Muhammad cartoon furor. Always good to keep the medal count and the body count in their proper places.
