From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Mexican researchers said Tuesday that they had discovered a large Mayan ball court during construction of a new housing development in Merida on the Yucatan Peninsula.

Researchers have now found at least 50 of the ceremonial ball courts in the region, the majority dated long before the courts appeared in other areas of Mesoamerica. That suggests that Mayan culture may have first blossomed on the peninsula, experts said.
