Allaire Crozer du Pont, 92, a thoroughbred enthusiast and owner of Kelso, five-time Horse of the Year, died Friday of natural causes at her Woodstock Farm near Chesapeake City, Md.

Kelso, Du Pont’s best-known horse, won 39 races, placed second 12 times and third twice and amassed career earnings of nearly $2 million. He was voted Horse of the Year five consecutive years from 1960 to 1964, a record that has never been broken. When the horse was retired, Du Pont rode him three days a week.

Du Pont was a co-founder of Thoroughbred Charities, which aids retired racehorses, and was among the first to commit her land to Maryland’s Agricultural Land Preservation Program.
