Spain arrested 20 people suspected of recruiting Islamist fighters to go to Iraq, and said one of the recruits had killed 19 Italians in a suicide bombing in Iraq in 2003.

Police arrested 15 Moroccans, three Spaniards, a Turk and an Algerian. The Madrid cell supplied fighters to the network of Abu Musab Zarqawi, Al Qaeda’s leader in Iraq, the Interior Ministry said. The ministry said the Barcelona-area cell was responsible for the bombing that killed the Italians.
