Several California corporate law firms are raising pay for their salaried lawyers for the first time since 2000, putting pressure on New York competitors.

At Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker, base pay for first-year salaried lawyers, called associates, will rise to $135,000 from $125,000 in California and Washington, D.C., the firm told its associates in a memo Tuesday.

The raises solidify California’s reputation as the pacesetter for first-year associates’ pay.
