Feb. 2-14: Hunt for treasure in the dark at the S.F. Indie Fest, which festival director Jeff Ross calls the city’s “irreverent, politically incorrect festival.” The eighth annual parade of curiosities and obscure gems opens Feb. 2 with “The Proposition,” written by Nick Cave and starring Guy Pearce and Emily Watson. Topping the documentary category is “A.K.A. Tommy Chong,” about the comedian’s recent arrest. Ross promises a program including “bizarre Japanese features” and “parties every night.”

Feb. 10-11: The International Mead Festival offers a chance to get a head start on Valentine’s Day with tastings of 80 varieties of the “drink of love” from 28 commercial meaderies, including entries from Poland, Canada and South Africa, as well as local host Redstone Meadery. The festival will be at the Boulder Outlook Hotel and Suites, and admission includes a taster glass, program and access to educational seminars. Here’s a starting tip: Mead is made from fermented honey.

Dallas

Feb. 10-13: Aspiring cheerleaders can see kids their ages and older yelling and dancing their hearts out at the 2006 Chick-fil-A NCA All-Star National Championship at the Dallas Convention Center. The nation’s best spirit competitors, from younger than 7 to age 18, will compete for various National Cheerleaders Assn. divisional championships.
