‘World News’ comes west

Two weeks after launching a Western edition of its evening newscast, ABC plans to broadcast “World News Tonight” from California.

Elizabeth Vargas is scheduled to anchor the show this evening from L.A., where she will interview Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, while her co-anchor, Bob Woodruff, will do the program from San Francisco. On Friday, Woodruff will anchor from Google’s Mountain View headquarters, Vargas from L.A.

Film award: USC’s 18th annual Scripter Award, for the best adaptation of a literary work to film, is going to Dan Futterman and Gerald Clarke for “Capote.” Futterman adapted the screenplay from Clarke’s 1988 biography of the same name.

TV award: Caroll Spinney, the puppeteer who plays “Sesame Street” icons Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch, will receive a lifetime achievement award at this year’s Daytime Emmy Awards on April 28.
