Lawmakers Pass Bill to Improve Mine Safety

After 14 coal mining deaths in three weeks, state lawmakers unanimously passed a bill in Charleston that would require mines to use electronic devices to track trapped miners and to stockpile oxygen to keep them alive until help arrived.

The state Senate and House acted with remarkable haste at the urging of Gov. Joe Manchin. “We can’t afford to wait any longer,” he said.
