Dance-off takes on a Texas flair

Share

A dance competition with untested artists, celebrity judges, audience voting and prize money: No, it’s not the delirious TV series “Dancing With the Stars” or “So You Think You Can Dance” but Ballet Austin’s very, very similar “New American Talent/Dance” event taking place Feb. 16-19 in Austin’s Paramount Theatre.

Selected from 50 applicants, choreographers Thang Dao, Thaddeus Davis and Sonya Delwaide will each get 40 hours to create a new work on the Austin dancers -- with professional performances, national publicity and a cash award as the potential payoff.

Ballet director -- An Arts Note last Sunday described John Meehan as the new artistic director of the Australian Ballet. He is the new artistic director of the Hong Kong Ballet.

Virginia Johnson (the editor of Pointe magazine), John Meehan (new artistic director of the Australian Ballet) and Dwight Rhoden (the artistic director of Complexions Dance Company) are the judges. But you, YOU, Y-O-U will get to vote, and even deliver TV-style screaming ovations, if you’re deep in the art of Texas three weeks from now.
