Faced with a Monday deadline, county officials postponed a decision on the fate of Sheriff’s Lt. Bill Hunt, who was placed on administrative leave the day after losing an election challenge to Sheriff Michael Carona.

The county’s chief executive officer, Thomas Mauk, was expected to decide by Monday whether to fire Hunt or return him to active service.

A county spokeswoman said Monday, however, that the decision was delayed 30 days at Carona’s request.
