A Gentle Show for the Soul

Dan Neil’s words really struck a nerve (“Laugh Liberally,” 800 Words, June 18). I’ve been experiencing unexplained twinges of anxiety ever since the release of the film “A Prairie Home Companion.” As an ardent fan of Robert Altman, I nonetheless question the wisdom of allowing right-wing Republicans to acquaint themselves with the gentle, kind elegance of “APHC,” which has served as respite for thoughtful liberals for many years.

Listening to “APHC” can be a near-transcendent experience. It lets me know with wit and humor that I’m not alone in this mess. No matter from which city the show emanates, large audiences respectfully take in every nuance and seem to appreciate the meaning and intent of every poignant or silly sketch performed.

The laughs, which are usually roars, indicate an enlightened audience and come from a place deep down in the soul. And the music is what music is supposed to be: beautiful and pure.
