Come Fly With Me

Monday is “Wrong Way” Corrigan Day. This is for everyone as directionally challenged as pilot Douglas Corrigan, who “accidentally” flew to Ireland instead of Long Beach in 1938, guided by a 20-year-old compass and fortified by chocolate and fig bars. Robert Trimborn, manager of the Santa Monica Airport, doubts the accidental nature of the trip but honors the eccentricity of the aviation legend: “Whenever he needed a woman he would walk right up to her and kiss her on the lips.” That reminds us of “Airplane!” Which reminds us of Leslie Nielsen. We suggest any Nielsen movie to enjoy the holiday. Surely we can’t be serious. We are serious, and stop calling us Shirley.
