From Times Staff Reports

The Department of Water and Power clarified on Tuesday a proposal to increase water rates.

The proposal calls for a rate hike averaging 2.75% overall, but most residential users would see their bills rise by 1.6% this year and by 2.2% next year, according to General Manager Ron Deaton.

Businesses would pay more, and those that use a lot of water, such as hotels, would see their rates increase 11.5%.

Commissioner Nick Patsaouras accused the department of poorly informing customers about the increase, saying that most believed they would find a 2.75% increase on their bill.

The board is expected at its next meeting to authorize the hike, which also requires City Council approval.
