Andrew Sudduth, 44; Won Rowing Silver Medal in ’84 Olympics

Andrew Sudduth, 44, a leading figure in U.S. rowing who was part of the eight-man team that won the silver medal at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, died Saturday of pancreatic cancer at his family’s home in Marion, Mass.

Sudduth, a native of Baltimore, began rowing at Phillips Exeter Academy. He went on to Harvard, where he was a member of the university’s 1985 national championship team.

At the 1984 games, he was part of the eight-oared shell with coxswain that lost to Canada for the gold by 0.42 of a second at Lake Casitas near Ventura.

He competed in single sculls at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul.

Sudduth studied computer systems at Harvard and worked in the computer industry, most recently at Cisco Systems.

He was diagnosed with cancer last fall.
