President Evo Morales questioned the power of the Roman Catholic Church in Bolivia, saying its leaders were being manipulated by elites who had “historically damaged the country.”

Morales, a leftist and the nation’s first indigenous president, had vowed to end centuries of discrimination against the poor Indian majority by a European-descended elite.

In a TV interview, Morales accused church leaders of being “an instrument of the oligarchs.”
