Head of Ruling Party Quits After Ballot Losses

South Korea’s ruling party chief resigned today to take responsibility for a crushing defeat in local elections Wednesday, when the conservative opposition won 12 of 16 key posts.
Uri Party Chairman Chung Dong-young acted after the party prevailed in only one vote, for governor of North Jeolla province. The Grand National Party won 12 posts, including mayor of Seoul. The Millennium Democratic Party won two races, and an independent candidate was elected governor of Jeju island.
