Stein on career day at Beverly Hills High

Re “Take my advice, Beverly Hills kids,” Opinion, May 30

Joel Stein’s column reeks of negative stereotypes and is offensive to Beverly Hills High School. It tells more about Stein, who apparently feels cheated by not being handed success, than about these hardworking students and their concerned parents and teachers. Being a teenager is difficult enough; our children don’t need to be disrespected by the likes of Stein.

Those complaining about Stein’s column regarding his appearance as a co-keynote speaker with Omarosa Manigault Stallworth at Beverly Hills High’s career day have only to blame those who thought that he and “Ms. Apprentice” would be appropriate. Highly educated and intellectually curious students wait all year to gain knowledge from extraordinary and decidedly respected individuals.

Originally, career day placed students in Beverly Hills businesses, allowing them to see firsthand the benefits and burdens of various vocations. Now, because of a laissez-faire attitude toward education, the planners of a day of learning have turned a remarkable immersion into an embarrassment.
