From Times wire reports

Drinking coffee cuts the risk of cirrhosis of the liver from alcohol by 22% per cup each day, researchers reported last Monday in the Archives of Internal Medicine. But they stopped short of saying doctors should prescribe coffee for that reason.

The cause of the protective effect is not clear, said the authors, who are with the Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program in Oakland. But they noted that “coffee is a complex substance with many potentially biologically active ingredients.”
