More TLC for Foster Kids

Share

As president of the California Alliance of Child and Family Services, I applaud the efforts of Judge Michael Nash in challenging the foster care system that discharges at-risk youth at age 18 (“Ready or Not?” by Douglas McGray, June 4). While most states and counties respond to the Chapin Hall study and other similar studies by reducing the number of children placed in foster care, Judge Nash points out the strengths of the system and proposes prolonging stays for some children. His stance is clearly child-focused.

While reform is no doubt required, the foster care system continues to benefit many of California’s most needy children--and many need services from this system beyond age 18.
