A Tamil Tiger leader has apologized to India for the 1991 assassination of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi by a Tiger suicide bomber.

“I would say it is a great tragedy we deeply regret,” chief rebel negotiator Anton Balasingham told India’s NDTV news channel.

The Tigers killed Gandhi to protest India’s involvement in Sri Lanka’s civil war at the time.

Indian officials said the country could never forgive the killing. “This would be tantamount to endorsing the philosophy of terror, violence and political assassination,” Deputy Foreign Minister Anand Sharma said.
