Bloom twins hail ‘uncle’ Woodruff

More than 2,000 politicians and media personalities packed the ballroom of the Washington Hilton Wednesday night for the annual Radio & Television Correspondents’ Assn. black-tie dinner, but a pair of 12-year-old girls stole the show.

For the first time, Christine and Nicole Bloom, the twin daughters of the late NBC correspondent David Bloom, presented the annual award for excellence in enterprise reporting named after their father. There was audible sniffling among the power players in the ballroom as they announced that this year’s honor would go to ABC anchor Bob Woodruff, who was injured in Iraq in January. After Bloom died in Iraq three years ago, Woodruff -- a close friend of his family -- became a surrogate uncle for Bloom’s children.

“I wish that I were here in person to accept this award and give you a giant hug all the way to the sky just like we always do,” the ABC anchor said in a statement read by his colleague Martha Raddatz.

Woodruff added: “My entire focus right now is on my family and my recovery -- and getting back to doing the job I so love.”
