Daytime Emmys fare poorly
A move to Hollywood couldn’t halt the Daytime Emmy Awards’ streak of declining viewership, according to figures released Tuesday by Nielsen Media Research.
ABC’s coverage of Friday’s three-hour ceremony at the Kodak Theatre, the first time the awards were held outside New York City in their 33-year history, drew 6.09 million viewers, a seventh consecutive record low.
Friday’s audience was 20% smaller than the previous low of 7.62 million, set last year when the awards were televised by CBS. The Daytime Emmys were first shown in prime time in 1991 and drew their largest audience, 21.96 million, in 1993.
Meanwhile, thanks in large measure to its powerhouse Thursday lineup, CBS was the week’s most-watched network for the seventh consecutive week, averaging 13.1 million viewers. But Fox was first for the 10th straight week among viewers ages 18 to 49, the group that Fox, ABC and NBC target.
