Villagers’ Clash With Police Leaves One Dead
A man was killed and several officers were injured when machete-wielding villagers clashed with about 400 police after a scuffle with flower sellers.
Police had arrested three men during a raid on roadside flower traders in San Salvador Atenco outside Mexico City. Charges were not immediately reported.
A mob quickly formed, burning tires and throwing rocks and gasoline bombs. A witness said one villager was killed and six officers were taken hostage. Television images showed rioters kicking and stomping on apparently unconscious policemen.
