Ex-L.A. County Deputy Confronts Police, Is Killed
A retired Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed after he pointed a gun at a police officer in Cypress late Sunday, officials said.
Cypress police stopped Carl Hensgen’s car near Malden and Bataan streets about 8 p.m., officials said.
Hensgen, 71, got out of his car and pointed a handgun at one of the officers, who fired, said Cypress Police Sgt. Jim Olson.
Hensgen died at the scene. None of the five officers who responded was injured.
Hensgen was a 17-year veteran of the department, officials said. He retired in 1978. He was an expert witness on fingerprints and testified frequently in criminal cases.
The shooting occurred shortly after a relative notified police that Hensgen was suicidal and had a handgun at his Tulagi Street home, Olson said.
While officers were on their way to the house, Hensgen drove to Manzanita Park on Orangewood Avenue where he waved the gun at park users, Olson said.
He then drove north on Malden, where police pulled him over.
