Australia said today that it had signed a deal for one of its nationals held at the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to serve his sentence in his home country if convicted by a U.S. military tribunal.

David Hicks, a Muslim convert, was detained in Afghanistan in December 2001 while allegedly fighting with the ousted Taliban government. He has been held at the U.S. camp since 2002. He has pleaded not guilty to charges of terrorist conspiracy and aiding the enemy.
