Composition matters for charter schools
Re “Still learning,” editorial, May 8
Your editorial suggested that school board member Julie Korenstein veered off into “nitpicking” when she asked officials of View Park charter schools about the composition of their student body and the number of students who qualify for free lunches, compared with those in the schools from which they draw students. That’s not nitpicking.
If charter schools select the easiest students to teach, their “success” is illusory. That’s fine for those who are fortunate to get away from the kids who aren’t focused on learning, but it’s a brain drain from those public schools that can’t tell uncooperative parents to take their children elsewhere.
