Typhoon Chanchu Slams Into South China Coast
Typhoon Chanchu hit south China today, killing two children and forcing the evacuation of more than 630,000 people, the New China News Agency said.
Vietnam said 11 ships with 99 fishermen had not been in radio contact for a day. Chanchu, with heavy rain and winds up to 106 mph, crossed the coast between Hong Kong and Taiwan, where an oil tanker ran aground. Flooding was widespread in the Chinese city of Shantou, the news agency said.
Chanchu, which means Pearl, killed at least 37 people in the Philippines last weekend.
