It was only 20 minutes, and just four scenes, but the big-screen version of the Tony Award-winning musical “Dreamgirls” was greeted with a rousing cheer and applause here Friday.

Starring Jamie Foxx, Beyonce Knowles and Eddie Murphy, the film won’t arrive in theaters until December. But director Bill Condon, DreamWorks SKG and Paramount Pictures saw a chance to launch the film’s publicity machine here before the world’s entertainment media.

A throng of fans lined the red carpet into the screening, waiting for a glimpse of Beyonce in her blue, form-fitting floor-length gown. Foxx drew laughter when he quipped: “The toughest thing in this movie is to have to kiss Beyonce.”

In the snippets shown, Foxx, Knowles and Murphy dance and sing their way through the sounds of Motown. In one scene, jealousy arises when Beyonce is named the group’s lead singer. In another, Murphy, who plays a James Brown-style singer, blisters the stage with Beyonce and her backup singers.
