Al Gore makes conservatives twitchy

Re “Same old Al,” Opinion, May 25

Al Gore’s faults are well known and hardly need to be rehashed at this point. We should admire him for his consistent concern for the environment. Typical of right-wing journalism, Jonah Goldberg does not discuss the real issue: global warming. Rather, he finds it easier to attack the messenger. Gore may have trouble defining himself, but I would have preferred him as president over the well-defined George W. Bush: incompetent, ignorant of global geopolitics, anti-environment and more concerned with spinning political problems than solving them.

Goldberg ignores what many find compelling about Gore: He was right on Iraq, and he was right on global warming. I believe that he took those stands when they were unpopular because he knew them to be the right ones for our country and our planet. These positions may not be sufficient for me to support a candidate for president, but they are at the top of my list.

Goldberg and other conservatives are obsessed with trashing Gore. Why? The 2000 popular vote winner reminds them just how slim their electoral majority has actually been in the last two elections. That is the inconvenient truth for Goldberg.
