Upshaw won’t perform with L.A. Phil
Soprano Dawn Upshaw has withdrawn from performances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Philharmonic New Music Group in January to pursue treatment for early-stage breast cancer, the orchestra announced Tuesday. Her prognosis for returning to full health is excellent, the announcement said.
Upshaw was scheduled to sing in the U.S. premiere of Kaija Saariaho’s “La Passion de Simone” with the Philharmonic, led by Esa-Pekka Salonen, on Jan. 12, 13 and 14. In place of the work, Salonen has scheduled Webern’s Five Pieces for Orchestra and Mahler’s Symphony No. 7. The Saariaho “Passion” will be performed later.
The Philharmonic New Music Group program, scheduled for Jan. 9, will be changed, with details to be announced later. Tickets for the “Passion” concerts may be used for the revised program or exchanged for any other regularly scheduled orchestra subscription concert during the current season.
