THE STUDIO REPORT

Disney

“Cars” will show that Pixar’s still on a roll: Every one of its features has been nominated so far and two have won (“The Incredibles,” “Finding Nemo”). But “The Wild” is a painful reminder of the cruel Oscar jungle.

DreamWorks

Except for “Madagascar,” all of its major features have been nominated since this category was created. This year, though, it has two (“Flushed Away,” “Over the Hedge”), and they could work against each other.

Miramax

Quirky “Renaissance” demonstrates that the studio does more than classy live action like “The Queen.” Weak reviews hurt its kudos hopes though.

MGM

The revitalized studio is eager to play in the Oscar game with “Arthur and the Invisibles,” but it’s up against some stiff competition.

Paramount

“Barnyard” aims to prove it can compete against sibling studio DreamWorks, but this may not be the year.

Sony / Columbia

“Open Season” and “Monster House” opened the new Sony Pictures Animation division.

Sony Pictures Classics

“Paprika” is one of the art shingle’s few animated films, but it’s no “Triplets of Belleville,” which was nominated in 2003.

20th Century Fox

“Ice Age: The Meltdown” could be a strong contender but “Everyone’s Hero” probably won’t make the cut.

Universal

Its cute, meddlesome monkey “Curious George” will want to join the party, but it was an ordinary offering.

Warner Bros.

“Happy Feet” has a clear shot at a nomination, but “The Ant Bully” will probably be shoved aside by rivals.

Early this year, “A Scanner Darkly” had one of the highest Cool Factors because of the heat of its creative team. But that cooled off quickly once filmgoers saw the confusing film.
