An appreciation for the simple things

RE “For Peace in the Garden: Just Let it Be,” [Oct. 26]: I hope you inspire many people since you hit the big points of saving our money and saving our oceans. Plus, imagine! Being able to enjoy our yards because they are quiet and take less work.

I have fooled around with native plants for 20 years. I am about to take out most of the old St. Augustine lawn and put in much-needed new drip/sprinkler systems and Mediterranean plants, along with a few California natives. A mini Getty Villa here in northwest Alhambra.

Thanks for your thoughts and inspiration. I’m going to print your article and give it to all of my neighbors. I’m really tired of hearing the gardeners every single day, morning and afternoon. Maybe a few of us will give the “hood” something to work toward: beauty that is affordable, practical and an environmental blessing.

THE article had a fresh approach to the environmentally abusive practices of the home gardener. I shall have to share it with my neighbors and hope that they may appreciate my garden and front yard more. I am the only house on my street without a front lawn and the only one without a “mow and blow” team.

As part of the Santa Clara County Master Gardeners, I regularly work our hotline. Over-watering is the problem we see, never under-watering.
