Re “What’s left of L.A.’s left?” Current, Nov. 19

I don’t know which assertion is stranger: Gregory Rodriguez’s that, until recently, left-liberal discourse was controlled by author Mike Davis, or Jill Stewart’s, that all leading local institutions are controlled by liberal Democrats. Which institutions are we talking about? The Times, owned by the Tribune Co.? The Catholic Church? The California Club? The Los Angeles Police Department? Or am I missing something?

I enjoyed reading about the rise and fall of L.A.’s left. More to the point, it pleased me to note that “under [Michael] Kinsley-hire Andres Martinez, the editorial page remains reliably liberal on social issues but more fiscally conservative and pro-business than in the past.” This is a rough description of a libertarian outlook, which I also have noted and approve. Keep up the good work.
