A U.S. Army National Guard soldier accused of blowing up two superior officers in Iraq will be tried on murder charges carrying a possible death penalty, the Army said.

Staff Sgt. Alberto B. Martinez will face court-martial on two counts of premeditated murder in the June 2005 deaths of Capt. Phillip T. Esposito and 1st Lt. Louis E. Allen near Tikrit, officials at Ft. Bragg, N.C., said in a statement.

Martinez is accused of detonating a mine and grenades that killed the officers. Testimony indicated that Esposito had relieved Martinez of his duties as a supply sergeant.
