Re “Illegal -- but Essential,” Oct. 1

The Times wrote about illegal workers: “No one has to fill out paperwork, follow safety regulations or pay taxes.” This is the main complaint taxpayers have about illegal immigrants. As for the young man in your article who is “putting money into the economy,” I can only wonder how many CDs and movies and soccer balls he would be paying for if he had to pay taxes too.

Essential to whom? Illegal immigration is just a bad habit that provides a quick fix for the people who can afford it. The middle class can’t afford it.
