Change is a given; have a plan for it

Share

I read “Marvel or Monster” [Sept. 21], about the radical changes in Mar Vista.

My neighborhood of 1950s one-story homes in Santa Barbara is experiencing similar gentrification, so I can relate to the impact that new two-story houses can have on neighboring homeowners. When a neighbor builds a large, two-story house, you lose views, solar access and privacy. The neighborhood often suffers a loss of architectural integrity.

As an architect designing new homes, whole-house remodels and major additions, I recognize the realities of the real estate market and of clients’ aspirations for their “dream house.”

Change will continue to take place in our neighborhoods. The important questions are: Will neighborhoods take control of change? Do they have a vision for the future, and will they develop clear criteria for project approval?
