L.A.’s Other Bright Spots

May I point out to Carol Tice that Los Angeles is also a place where cancer cures are sought and airplanes are built, though not so many as in the past (“Out From Under the Klieg Lights,” Style, Sept. 17). Such practical activities can occur in a sunlit place as well as in a cloud-covered one. Indeed, Los Angeles has one of the most productive and diverse economies in the world, which includes a large manufacturing sector and several world-renowned medical research universities.

The vast majority of Angelenos have nothing to do with L.A.’s “movie town.” I’m glad she’s enjoying the mists of the north, but there’s no need to explain her preference by perpetuating the myth of L.A. as a one-note town.
