A group of prisoners convicted of involvement in the 2001 assassination of former Congolese President Laurent Kabila escaped from jail in Kinshasa, officials said.

Prison director Dido Kitunga said 11 inmates escaped.

An army official said the prisoners had bribed jail officials in the Democratic Republic of Congo, formerly known as Zaire.
