10 Sentenced in Slaying of Opposition Politician
A court sentenced a former police office and nine other men to long jail terms in the killing of a key opposition politician after a trial criticized by the opposition as biased.
The bodies of politician Altynbek Sarsenbayev, his driver and bodyguard were found outside the Central Asian state’s biggest city, Almaty, in February with gunshot wounds to the head and back.
Former policeman Rustam Ibragimov, who prosecutors said organized the killing, was sentenced to death. But the term will be commuted to life in prison because Kazakhstan has a moratorium on capital punishment.
