Immigration is the issue

Re “Textbook foolishness,” Opinion, Sept. 13

I appreciated Jennifer Washburn’s opinion piece arguing in favor of special textbooks for English learners. Unfortunately, she fails to address the heart of the matter: immigration policy.

The reason we have so many kids in our schools who don’t understand English is because of our broken immigration system. Until we are willing to deal with this root cause, we will continue to fight symptoms without really solving the problem.

What we need is a rational policy on immigration, not new textbooks.
