The Defense Department last week identified the following American military personnel killed in Afghanistan or Iraq:

Marcus A. Cain, 20, of Crowley, La.; corporal, Army. Cain was among three soldiers killed Sept. 14 in a suicide truck bombing at a west Baghdad electrical substation that their unit was guarding. He was assigned to the 4th Support Battalion, 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

David J. Davis, 32, of Mount Airy, Md.; sergeant, Army. Davis was killed Sept. 17 when a roadside bomb exploded near his Stryker armored vehicle in the Sadr City area of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 4th Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment, 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team at Ft. Wainwright, Alaska.

Bernard L. Deghand, 42, of Mayetta, Kan.; sergeant first class, Army National Guard. Deghand was killed Sept. 15 when his unit was attacked with rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire in Spira, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 35th Division Artillery, Army National Guard in Hutchinson, Kan.

Jennifer M. Hartman, 21, of New Ringgold, Pa.; sergeant, Army. Hartman was among three soldiers killed Sept. 14 in a suicide truck bombing at a west Baghdad electrical substation that their unit was guarding. She was assigned to the 4th Support Battalion, 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Russell M. Makowski, 23, of Union, Mo.; specialist, Army. Makowski was killed Sept. 14 when a roadside bomb exploded near him while on foot patrol in Taji, Iraq, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 42nd Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Robb G. Needham, 51, of Vancouver, Wash.; master sergeant, Army Reserve. Needham was killed Sept. 20 when his patrol unit was attacked with small-arms fire in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 356th Regiment (Logistical Support), 4th Brigade, 91st Division, Army Reserve at Ft. Lewis, Wash.

David S. Roddy, 32, of Aberdeen, Md.; petty officer second class, Navy. Roddy was killed Sept. 16 when a roadside bomb exploded while he was on his way to dismantle another bomb in Iraq’s Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 2 at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base in Norfolk, Va.

Yull Estrada Rodriguez, 21, of Alegre Lajas, Puerto Rico; corporal, Marine Corps. Estrada Rodriguez was killed Sept. 20 when his 7-ton truck struck a roadside bomb in Iraq’s Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.

Jeffrey P. Shaffer, 21, of Harrison, Ark.; private first class, Army. Shaffer was killed Sept. 13 when a roadside bomb exploded near his Bradley fighting vehicle in Ramadi, Iraq, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, 1st Armored Division in Bamberg, Germany.

Aaron A. Smith, 31, of Killeen, Texas; sergeant, Army. Smith was among three soldiers killed Sept. 14 in a suicide truck bombing at a west Baghdad electrical substation that their unit was guarding. He was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 27th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 1st Armored Division in Baumholder, Germany.

Clint E. Williams, 24, of Kingston, Okla.; sergeant, Army. Williams was killed Sept. 14 when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

James R. Worster, 24, of Broadview Heights, Ohio; sergeant, Army. Worster died of noncombat-related injuries Sept. 18 in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 10th Combat Support Hospital, 43rd Area Support Group at Ft. Carson, Colo.

Christopher M. Zimmerman, 28, of Stephenville, Texas; sergeant, Marine Corps. Zimmerman was killed Sept. 20 in a gun battle in Fallouja, Iraq, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.
