Thousands Seek Refuge Amid Fears of Attack
From Times Wire Reports
About 1,400 Muslims, many of them women and children, sought shelter on an island in violence-racked eastern Sri Lanka amid fears that rebel forces were planning an assault.
Thousands more were stranded in Mutur, waiting for a ferry to take them to join others on the nearby island of Kinniya, witnesses said.
The exodus came as the nation’s military reported that it had it sunk 11 Tamil rebel boats and killed 70 fighters off the coast during a five-hour battle.
