Impressed by the attention the National Spelling Bee has received in recent years -- especially the 8.5 million viewers it attracted in a prime-time telecast on ABC in June -- cable-network GSN is launching a National Vocabulary Championship for high school students, with the winner to receive $40,000 when the final competition is telecast in February.

Students in grades 9 through 12 can register to enter, and receive vocabulary-enhancing study materials, at www.winwithwords.com. Entrants must take an online qualifying test on one of 10 dates between Oct. 27 and Nov. 5. Fifty finalists will then compete in GSN’s televised championship in New York City next year.
