Gas stations, banks and supermarkets here shut their doors Thursday in a protest by business owners demanding that the federal government act in a conflict between state Gov. Ulises Ruiz and those who want him to resign.

Although larger businesses associated with the chamber of commerce closed, many smaller shops remained open.

About 50 people staged a protest in a square Thursday against the governor, four months after the beginning of a teachers strike that has spiraled out of control. The teachers have been joined by left-wing and Indian groups. They say the governor has allowed off-duty local police to shoot demonstrators.

Five people have been killed in drive-by shootings and ambushes, and buses have been hijacked to barricade streets.
