Renovation due for Staatsoper
Berlin’s famous Staatsoper opera house is expected to undergo a three-year renovation starting in September 2010, general manager Peter Mussbach said Monday.
Officials at the Staatsoper have long argued that the 18th century building is in dire need of restoration. It was reopened by East German authorities in 1955 after being gutted at the end of World War II and was last renovated in 1986.
The renovation is expected to cost about $174 million, with the German federal and Berlin state governments contributing $67 million each. The remainder will come from an association of friends of the opera.
