Journalist’s death probed as murder
Zimbabwe police said they had opened a murder investigation in the death of an independent journalist, and a lawyer said another reporter arrested under sweeping media laws had been assaulted and tortured.
A police spokesman said the body of Edward Chikombo, who left his job as a cameraman at government-run television in 2002, was found March 31 about 20 miles from his home in the Harare township of Glen View.
Journalist Gift Phiri, who spent nearly a week in custody, suffered a broken finger and other injuries in police assaults, his lawyer said.
