Fischer to follow Slatkin in D.C.
Ivan Fischer, who has served as principal guest conductor of the National Symphony since 2005, has been named principal conductor of the Washington-based orchestra for a two-year term beginning with the 2008-09 season.
Leonard Slatkin, the orchestra’s fifth music director, will step down at the end of the 2007-08 season.
The 56-year-old Fischer founded the Budapest (Hungary) Festival Orchestra in 1983. During his tenure in Washington, officials of the National Symphony said, the orchestra will continue its search for a music director to succeed Slatkin.
