Police Commission urges change in new gun law

Moving to close a loophole in a new gun control law, the Police Commission recommended Tuesday that owners be prohibited from throwing away unwanted firearms and instead turn them over to police.

The proposal follows the city’s approval of a law requiring gun owners to report stolen or missing guns to police within 48 hours. That would help curb a practice of “straw” buyers purchasing weapons for resale to criminals.

“The owner has the loophole of basically declaring the weapon was thrown in the trash,” said Cmdr. Mike Williams.
