Ex-president faces corruption case
Prosecutors filed corruption charges against former President Miguel Angel Rodriguez, nearly three years after he resigned as head of the Organization of American States to face accusations of accepting a bribe from French telecom Alcatel.
Rodriguez is accused of taking about $230,000 from Alcatel’s Latin American branch in exchange for granting it a $149-million cellphone contract in 2001, La Nacion newspaper reported.
La Nacion said Rodriguez also pocketed an additional $590,000 from the firm, according to testimony from Jose Antonio Lobo, former director of Costa Rica’s Electricity Institute.
