Working against labor

Re “Named for labor leader, UC program fights for funds,” Aug. 21

It is typical of his party that state Senate Republican leader Dick Ackerman of Irvine wants to see the Miguel Contreras Labor Program deleted, but he has no difficulty funding the teaching of business and financial courses that are a reasonable part of the education of those who enter the ranks of management. He believes that it is better to simply throw out into “the real world” those who want to work for and with the labor movement, with no education or skills to do so.

His attitude is another example of the pro-business, anti-labor forces at work in this country. That kind of thinking has resulted in a steady decline in wages, health insurance and retirement benefits for many.
